Lighting:

A good and 'less processing speed' way for getting the lighting direction right is to turn the 'use selected light' button on.
Lighting
Quicker render:
Rendering a full resolution image can be quite time consuming on a machine if you want to have a quick look for how your file really looks like. Here is a trick to see the renders on half or a quarter res or even lower than that. Rendering > Render > Test Resolution.

These things always come in handy when you want to speed up your rendering capabilities.

Remove unwanted objects in your scene.

Try not to use very High Resolution Texture for objects that are going to look really small in the shot. Same goes with Hi-res geometry.

Keep proxy of Objects and textures

Use instancing when necessary

Use the Lights adequately. A number of lights can only make your shot quite heavy.

Don't overlap your 3D objects, at times, it will take more time to render than you can imagine.

Resources:
A really good resource for getting some amazing maya (mel and python) scripts is http://www.creativecrash.com most of them are free. One can find anything from creating random rocks scripts to getting your interface to work according to your likes. Also, a good forum to ask any questions - Artistic or technical can be asked here cgtalk.com or cgtantra.com

Bonus tools for Maya http://area.autodesk.com/bonus_tools

These are a good bunch of plug-ins for maya which are not readily available within the software but you can downlod and install them. The user will get an additional drop-down menu for more intresting bit of controls and features.
