Jumpbox:

Traditionally Joomla could only be deployed on a web server. But if you want to run Joomla locally for testing or any other reason, the JumpBox for Joomla provides you with the ability to run it locally with a pre-built and pre-configured virtual application. You can conveniently deploy Joomal on Windows, Mac, or Linux using virtualization tools such as VMware. To deploy Joomla locally using VMware or Parallels, first download Jumpbox for Joomla. Similarly, if you're running VirtualBox, download the OVF file available at http://download.jumpbox.com. In VMware Player, simply extract the ZIP file for the JumpBox and double-click the VMX or PVS files subsequently. From here on setting up Joomla is the same process as on a web server.

Access levels:
Sometimes it is recommended that you do not leave all of your information on the website freely accesible to everyone on the internet. Using Joomla you can keep certain parts of your website private and make it accessible only to specific users like the website moderators, authors or create sections specifically for registered usrs.

From the Joomla Admin Panel proceed to Content > Article Manager and select the article you would like to make private and on the right side of the window under the Parameters section you can set the Access level to Registered or Special depending on weather you want people with the registered user level and above or people with the author user level to be able to view the article.
Setting the access level is as easy as  drop-down box
