Quad-Core power on a budget
The Inspiron’s shiny body is what will catch your attention. The lid, which can be customized in many colours, has a shine to it, despite the finish not actually being glossy. The 15.6 inch screen has well proportioned contrast to brightness levels, and images retain their sharpness. The keyboard is neither chiclet nor floating, but it is extremely comfortable to use, and the big screen size allows for a dedicated number pad. What the laptop misses out on is a bunch of dedicated access buttons for media playback, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and touchpad off.
For a machine powered by the AMD Phenom II N930 Quad Core processor (2 GHz) and 4 GB of system RAM, performance was never going to be a problem. All the benchmarks we ran on the machine indicated a very powerful setup. A lot of people will use this machine for multimedia viewing, and the case is helped by big screen which is quite good and inbuilt speakers that offer better than expected performance. Even at Volume levels of about 70 percent, the audio was clear, with no jarring. The battery life was disappointing (1 hour), but this was at the max performance settings.
The Dell Inspiron M501R has all the performance you’ll need if you’re looking to replace your desktop. In the Rs 40,000 price bracket, you should also check out the HP G-series laptops. If you can extend your budget a little, the HP DV-6 range of models or the Gateway ID59C laptop might be better choices.
