The Sony VAIO S is a premium sleek performance-rich laptop, aimed at the style-conscious. The under 2kg laptop has a dull metal exterior with a fine sandpaper finish. Its keyboard deck is comprised of a single aluminium slab which dips and flexes if pressed heavily. The screen vibrates a bit while typing in a hurry, and it isn’t exactly rugged.
In terms of features, the Sony VAIO S is better decked out than any other portable 13-inch notebook at its price. It has a quick fire CPU & GPU combo which elevates it over most mainstream laptops. All its connectivity ports are situated on the right. There are HDMI and USB 3.0 ports. It also has a fingerprint sensor for biometric protection.
The VAIO S performs well overall. Despite having a spinning 5400-rpm drive, the laptop is extremely quick to boot into Windows 7 – consistently under 30 sec. Our bench mark scores suggest a better than mid-range performance, overall, given its hardware configuration. Casual gamers will be happy to note the notebook handles games well at medium settings – anything more is a stretch. Typing on the back-lit isolated keys is great, so is the wide, smooth touchpad. Its six cell battery lasted for 2 hours 20 minutes (on high performance mode) while looping a video. If you switch to the laptop’s Stamina mode (onboard graphics), on a conservative battery plan, except the battery to last more. Overall, a very good laptop for the price.
