LG Optimus Black : Dark disappointment

Straight out of the box, two things catch your eye. First, the lack of weight. At less than 110 grams, this phone glides squarely in the featherweight category. Second is the sense of compactness despite the 4-inch display.

The 4-inch IPS LCD display is touted as the “best display in the world”. While it isn’t the best, it’s actual very good. The brightness levels are quite high, which makes the settings level at 30-40 per cent more than enough. The auto brightness also has two modes – best battery and best performance. Enough legibility is bright sunlight, but you will have to put in an effort to read some of the text.

The 1GHz processor is the Cortex A8- the single core type. Interface remains slick, and apps open up quite quickly.

Weirdly though, there is a lag in the time the screen unlock button (power key) is pressed, and the display actually comes on. Same problem persists with the proximity sensor. Remove the phone from the ear, and it again takes a couple of seconds before the display lights up again.

While there’s a lot of real estate on the screen, the typing isn’t very precise. While you may feel that you’re typing the correct word/alphabet, it may mostly turn out to be wrong. This problem remains, whatever keyboard layout you may be using. No such problem in the landscape mode.

The 5MP camera isn’t as good. This one faces a huge shutter lag issue. Result- heavily blurred images!  The clarity is okay, if you have clicked a stationary object, in good lighting conditions. Good points for lack of noise.

If you are about to spend Rs 20k on a phone, the Samsung Galaxy S feels faster in terms of raw performance. Or check out the Samsung Nexus S with the latest Android 2.3 OS.
