Restore without Rebooting:
Ubuntu separates the Graphical applications from the core system, and if you're stuck with a system that just hung on you, you can still revive it without a restart. Press [Ctrl] + [Alt] + Back-space to kill the Xserver and get back to login screen. This will kill all your graphical applications and command line applications specific to your username and bring you back to the login screen. This will leave the server running as root intact, and will be faster than a complete reboot. To enable this shortcut, navigate to System > Preferences > Keyboard. Choose the "Layouts" tab and click the "Options" button. Over there select "Key sequence to kill the X server" and enable " Control + Alt _ Backspace".
