Accommodating for complex folds into the design layout is necessary for printing and is mostly a very challenging job for designers while making layouts. They often end up doing it incorrectly, which is headache for the printer. Using InDesign CS5, you can now create fold marks on output. Let's illustrate this by using a simple trifold brochure. Start by calculating the exact measurements for the panel for both the outside and the inside. Create a new document and create about six pages with the size of your indivisual outer panel. Turn Facing Pages Off so that you have more control for moving the pages.
Now deselect Allow Document Pages from the Pages panel menu and drag the pages around so that you create two slides of three pages each representing each side of the brochure. Now you will need to make two different master pages, one for the Outer panel we will be using the one already present. Leave it named as "A Master". Now make the second master by choosing New Master from the Pages panel menu. Give it the name "B Master Inside".
In the "B Master Inside" master page using the control panel setting, give it the Inner Panel size setting. Now drag the "B Master Inside" master into the left page of the outside three page layer and the right page of the inside three-page layer. Be careful of the fact that the pages just touch and not overlap because these two pages now have different sizes.
Add a bledd area by choosing File > Document Setup. Use the same dialog box to put in a slug at the bottom. Use the slug area to label the panels. Now while printing or exporting to a PDF, turning on spreads and selecting the Crop Marks option from the Marks & Bleeds panel will let you put in solid fold marks in your output. Your printer should be happy because he will have a clear idea about the folds you wish for.
